In the Naruto universe, jutsu are classified. Most are fair game. Some are restricted. And then there are the kinjutsu — the forbidden techniques — outlawed because the cost of using them is too high, the damage too permanent, or the power too dangerous to exist in anyone's hands.

Here are the 10 most forbidden jutsu in Naruto, what they actually do, and why even the most powerful villages decided some things shouldn't be done.

1. Edo Tensei — Reanimation Jutsu

Created by: Tobirama Senju. Perfected by: Orochimaru and Kabuto.

Edo Tensei reanimates the dead by binding a soul to a living sacrifice and encasing it in a regenerating body of ash and dirt. The reanimated individual retains their personality, memories, and all of their jutsu — but cannot be killed by conventional means. Kabuto's perfected version was so dangerous that it required Itachi to sacrifice himself from the inside to undo it, and it effectively turned the Fourth Shinobi World War into a fight against every legendary shinobi who had ever died.

Why it's forbidden: It requires a human sacrifice and creates an immortal army. The only thing more dangerous than a powerful enemy is a powerful enemy you literally cannot kill.

2. Izanagi

Used by: Danzo Shimura, Obito Uchiha.

Izanagi allows a Sharingan user to rewrite reality for a brief window — turning injuries, death, or any unfavourable outcome into illusion, while making their attacks real. In practice: you can die and then undo it. The cost is permanent blindness in the eye used. Danzo implanted himself with seven stolen Sharingan specifically to use this technique seven times.

Why it's forbidden: The ability to negate death in combat is, effectively, the ability to win any fight. The Uchiha clan outlawed it to protect the integrity of reality itself — a clan that bans its own technique is telling you something.

3. Izanami

Used by: Itachi Uchiha.

The counterpart to Izanagi. Where Izanagi rewrites reality, Izanami traps the target in an infinite loop of a moment in time — a genjutsu they cannot escape until they accept reality as it truly is. Itachi used it on Kabuto to break his control over Edo Tensei. Like Izanagi, it costs the user permanent blindness in the eye used.

Why it's forbidden: Trapping someone in an inescapable mental loop indefinitely is, philosophically, worse than killing them. It was outlawed to prevent Uchiha from using it as a tool of psychological control over others.

4. Eight Gates — Hachimon Tonkō

Used by: Might Guy, Rock Lee, various.

The Eight Gates are chakra limiters built into the human body. Opening them sequentially removes those limiters, exponentially increasing speed and power — up to the Eighth Gate, which releases all of a person's life force as chakra. The user briefly becomes powerful enough to wound Madara Uchiha. Then their body disintegrates.

Why it's forbidden: The Eighth Gate is a technique that kills its user. Opening the earlier gates causes serious long-term physical damage. It is the purest expression of paying with your body for power — and the final gate means paying with your life.

5. Dead Demon Consuming Seal — Shiki Fūjin

Used by: Minato Namikaze, Hiruzen Sarutobi.

This technique summons the Shinigami — the death god — who tears out the souls of both the target and the user, sealing them in its stomach for eternity. Minato used it to seal half of Kurama into himself and half into Naruto. Hiruzen used it in his final battle to try to seal Orochimaru's arms. Both died performing it.

Why it's forbidden: There is no surviving this technique. It is a guaranteed trade: you die, and your soul is consumed. It exists as a last resort and nothing more.

6. Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation — Kuchiyose: Edo Tensei (variations)

While already covered under Edo Tensei broadly, it's worth noting that specific variants — particularly summoning the previous Kage or using Hashirama's cells to enhance reanimated bodies — were considered separately forbidden even within the already-outlawed technique.

Why it's forbidden: The baseline is already banned. Each enhancement to it compounds the ethical and practical horror.

7. Curse Mark — Juinjutsu

Created by: Orochimaru.

Orochimaru's curse marks were a unique kinjutsu — a seal bitten into the recipient that, when activated, forcibly opens their chakra gates and floods them with his senjutsu chakra. The result is a massive power boost accompanied by physical transformation — and gradual erosion of the user's personality and will. Sasuke, Anko, Kimimaro, and the Sound Four all carried variants. Most of its users were eventually broken by it.

Why it's forbidden: It's not a technique so much as a leash. Orochimaru designed it to make his subordinates dependent on him and to eventually take over their bodies. Power with a built-in self-destruct and an owner.

8. Kotoamatsukami

Used by: Shisui Uchiha, later Danzo.

Kotoamatsukami is a Mangekyō Sharingan genjutsu so refined that the target doesn't know they've been affected. It rewrites their thoughts and motivations at the source — making them genuinely believe they chose to act the way they now act. Shisui intended to use it to peacefully stop the Uchiha coup. Danzo stole his eye to use it for his own political ends.

Why it's forbidden: Mind control that leaves no trace and feels like free will is not a weapon. It's an erasure of personhood. The village leadership feared what would happen if it fell into the wrong hands — and were right to, given what Danzo did with it.

9. Twin Lions Crumbling Attack — Sōshuuha

Used by: Various users of the Eight Trigrams style.

Less famous than others on this list but genuinely devastating: this technique channels enormous chakra into a destructive wave capable of levelling large areas. Its forbidden status relates to the collateral destruction it causes and the chakra toll it imposes on the user.

Why it's forbidden: Some techniques are banned not because of what they do to the user, but because of what they do to everything within range.

10. Inferno Style: Flame Control — Amaterasu Variants

Used by: Itachi and Sasuke Uchiha.

Amaterasu itself — black flames that cannot be extinguished and burn at the temperature of the sun — is not technically classified as forbidden. But certain advanced applications, particularly Sasuke's Flame Control (shaping and directing Amaterasu flames) and the combination with Susanoo to create flaming arrows, push into territory that most villages consider beyond acceptable combat use. The flames burn for seven days and nights and cannot be put out by any conventional means.

Why it's forbidden: A fire you cannot put out, directed with precision, in an inhabited area, is not a weapon. It's a catastrophe.
