On the night of Naruto's birth, the Nine-Tailed Fox — Kurama — was ripped from his mother Kushina and turned into a weapon against the Hidden Leaf Village. The Fourth Hokage Minato sealed Kurama into his newborn son to stop the destruction — and Naruto grew up not knowing why the village feared him, only that it did.

What followed over the next 700 chapters is one of the most quietly extraordinary relationship arcs in all of anime: a boy who had nothing learning to trust a being who hated everything, until the two of them became something that neither could have been alone.

The Uchiha clan used the Sharingan to dominate him. Madara weaponised him. Even his sealing into Naruto — however necessary — was an imprisonment.

Inside Naruto, Kurama was locked behind a seal in a dark flooded space that looked like a sewer. He spent years nursing his rage, feeding on Naruto's negative emotions, and waiting. When Naruto first encountered him as a child — accidentally touching the seal during moments of extreme stress — Kurama offered power freely, because power without control destroys its wielder. That was fine with Kurama. Destruction was the point.

For most of the early series, Kurama is not a character. He is a threat. A force Naruto has to suppress rather than understand.

The Shift: Naruto Meets His Mother's Chakra

The first real turning point comes not through combat but through memory. During the battle with Pain, Naruto loses control completely and reaches the eight-tailed state — almost releasing Kurama entirely. It is the chakra of his mother Kushina, imprinted within the seal, that pulls him back.

Kushina tells Naruto the truth: who she was, how the seal works, how much his parents loved him. And critically — she apologises to Kurama. Not for sealing him, but for the circumstances. It is the first time anyone has acknowledged Kurama's experience as something that deserves acknowledgement.

It doesn't immediately change everything. But a door opens.

The Confrontation: Naruto Faces Kurama Directly

During his training with Killer Bee, Naruto finally goes inside himself — into the seal — and faces Kurama not as a desperate child drawing on forbidden power, but as someone who has decided to understand rather than suppress.

Kurama expects hatred. He expects to be caged more tightly. Instead, Naruto tells him: "I want to know your real name. The pain you felt."

Kurama laughs at him. He calls it naive. He throws every terrible memory at Naruto — every moment the world treated the Nine-Tails as a monster, every time power was ripped from him, every human who looked at him and saw only a weapon.

Naruto doesn't flinch. He says he can't fully understand Kurama's pain. But he's not going to pretend it didn't happen.

Then he takes the seal and removes it himself — willingly absorbing Kurama's chakra not through force but through choice. Kurama, stunned, watches as Naruto enters Nine-Tails Chakra Mode for the first time: a form that doesn't burn Naruto from the inside because it isn't coerced. It's given.

The Partnership: Fighting Side by Side

From this point forward, everything changes. Kurama is no longer a prisoner. He begins, grudgingly, to cooperate. He monitors Naruto's chakra expenditure. He warns him when he's overextending. He grumbles about it in Naruto's head in a way that is, unmistakably, fond.

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Kurama takes an active role for the first time — not as an uncontrolled force but as a participant. He shares his chakra intentionally, coordinates with Naruto in real time, and eventually distributes chakra to the entire Allied Shinobi Forces through Naruto. An act of generosity from a being who, at the start of the series, had spent centuries as a weapon.

The two develop a rhythm. A shorthand. When Naruto is in danger, Kurama throws everything at keeping him alive. When Kurama needs to be convinced of something, Naruto talks to him like a person. Because that's what Kurama is.

The Peak: Baryon Mode

The pinnacle of their bond — and the moment that breaks everyone who watches it — is Baryon Mode.

Facing Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, a being so far beyond their current power that nothing they have can touch him, Kurama offers Naruto a new option. Baryon Mode fuses their chakra at a fundamental level, consuming both their life forces as fuel. It is, as Kurama frames it, nuclear fusion rather than multiplication. The result is a form powerful enough to genuinely threaten Isshiki — at the cost of whoever runs out of life force first.

Naruto agrees, believing it will cost both their lives. He fights Isshiki with everything, burning through his own existence, at peace with dying if it means protecting his family and village.

Then Kurama tells him the truth: it was only ever going to be Kurama's life. He lied — not to trick Naruto, but because he knew Naruto wouldn't have agreed if he'd understood the real cost. Kurama chose to die so that Naruto could live.

The being who spent centuries wanting destruction sacrificed himself so that the boy who trusted him — who saw him as a person when no one else did — could continue.
